info: ekathimerini
The island of Aegina, 12 miles from the port of Piraeus, is home to the Hellenic Wildlife Hospital (HWH), a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization operating since 1984. It is the oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation center in Southern Europe, dedicated to the treatment and rehabilitation of all species of wildlife indigenous to Greece as well as to educating and informing the public on wildlife protection issues and taking preventive action.

HWH treats between 3,000 and 4,500 wild animals from all over Greece every year. It operates through a vast network of volunteers, collaborating organizations, first-aid stations and local branches. Many rare and endangered species have been treated here: pelicans, Eleonora’s falcons (Falco eleonorae), lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni), imperial and spotted eagles (Aquila heliaca and Aquila clanga), griffon and Egyptian vultures (Gyps fulvus and Neophron percnopterus), black and white storks (Ciconia nigra and Ciconia ciconia), herons and waders.

Most of the animals are admitted for injuries resulting from illegal hunting, poisoning or exhaustion during migration. After rehabilitation, they are released back into a suitable habitat. HWH is involved in diverse projects on wildlife protection, in collaboration with peer organizations elsewhere in the Balkans and Turkey. It also regularly conducts environmental education projects for schools. HWH hosts about 100 volunteers for various lengths of time every year.
