EMAS 2012 will provide an ambitious, wide-ranging scientific programme focused on "hot button issues" in the field including:
  • Breast Cancer
  • Contraception and fertility in the perimenopause
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Ovarian, uterine, and breast cancer
  • Sexuality
  • Late parenthood
  • The aging male and andropause
"During the past year, there have been new insights into field of menopause; we now understand we must do more than treat symptoms: we must prevent disease "said Dr. Irene Lambrinoudaki, a gynecological endocrinologist and president of EMAS 2012's national organising committee. Dr. Lambrinoudaki, a renowned expert in the field, is Assistant Professor of Gynecological Endocrinology at the University of Athens and responsible for the Menopause Clinic at the university's Aretaieio Hospital.

These new developments will be presented in EMAS 2012's scientific programme. "We will broaden the spectrum of topics from menopause and menopausal symptoms to post-menopausal conditions and prevention, mainly prevention of disease, meaning cancer prevention, osteoporosis, cardiovascular, and dementia prevention, "said Dr. Lambrinoudaki.

She added, "We are going to announce new trials of hormone replacement therapy and their effect on the cardiovascular system." Furthermore, an emphasis on lifestyle changes as a means to improve disease prevention will be discussed through various educational forums.

EMAS 2012 will also present the latest research and strategies to combat breast cancer, the most prevalent form of cancer to afflict menopausal women as well as osteoporosis. The latter has developed in into a major public health issue. The statistics are staggering:
  • Osteoporotic fractures occur three times more often than coronary heart disease and 10 times more often than breast cancer
  • In Europe and the USA, less than 50% of women with osteoporosis are diagnosed
  • Half of the women with diagnosed osteoporosis receive medical treatment
The scientific programme will include keynote lectures, parallel sessions, satellite symposia, meet the professor sessions, and debates. Moreover, national EMAS societies will have their own sessions to present and discuss local issues in the field of mid-life health.

The choice of Greece as venue is no accident. According to Dr. Lambrinoudaki, "the field of menopause as a medical field is on the decline in Greece...there are few specialists. As such, it's important for the congress to be here - to raise awareness of this field."

As such, EMAS 2012 participants will benefit from both a stellar line up of internationally acclaimed speakers, as well as the historic city of Athens acting as a beautiful backdrop.
"Athens is a beautiful destination, which is on the sea. At the end of March, it's mild enough for outdoor activities," said Dr. Lambrinoudaki. "Participants can easily arrange day trips from Athens to places such as Cape Sounion, Delphi, Napflion, Mycenae, and nearby islands on a one-day cruise."
