Agrafa on high

Explore the pristine beauty of this district in Evrytania

The mountainous and lush Agrafa district, northwest of Karpenisi in Evrytania and between the Tavropos (Megdovas) and Acheloos rivers, is so pristine and unspoiled that access is possible only via narrow forest roads best traveled using 4x4s.

After crossing the iron bridge over the Tavropos, on the road from Karpenisi to Agrinio, take a right turn toward Kerasohori. You first come to Viniani, an historic village abandoned after an earthquake, with a wonderful, old stone bridge traversing the Tavropos, which serves as a starting point for river sports routes. Once past Viniani, you come to a crossroads: Turn right to Dafni and a few kilometers later left to Chryso, a typical Agrafa village with a long history. The road will take you through imposing gorges and steep bluffs, with two more old stone bridges on the right-hand side. Worth seeing are the village’s seven medieval stone fountains. Next are Kerasohori, Maratho and then Agrafa village, at an elevation of 800 meters and with a population of just 150 in winter, which multiplies in summer.

The Agrafa area is crossed by European Walking Route E4 and is suitable for mountaineering excursions.

Another route to the northern villages of Evrytania follows the Agrafiotis River, the third tributary to the Kremasta reservoir, best seen from the Monastery of Tatarna. The monastery hosts a famous icon dating back to 1350.

In Agrafa, you will find the attractive, very hospitable and comfortable Kyra Niki guesthouse (www.kyra-niki.gr). For information or to make reservations, call 22650.62496 or 6944.535.718.
