Acropolis Museum in Athens
Opened in June 2009, the new Acropolis Museum, designed by the internationally acclaimed Bernard Tschumi in collaboration with Greek architect Michael Photiadis, was a great step up from its former premises, which resembled something like a shed atop the ancient citadel. Visitors to the 14,000-square meter state-of-the-art building can observe around 4,000 artifacts while looking up toward the Parthenon itself, which is visible through the windows just 280 meters away. The museum has a giftshop and cafe -- which also offers excellent views of the Acropolis -- while visitors can also see archaeological findings unearthed during the building’s construction which have been covered in glass for their protection.

Church of Panaghia Kapnikarea in Athens
Built on the remains of an ancient temple (possibly dedicated to either Athena or Demeter), this cross-in-square Byzantine church was founded around 1050 and is of the complex four-column type. A small porch with two columns at the south end and the entrance mosaics are probably 12th-century additions. Most of the paintings inside the church were painted by the modern Greek artist Photios Kontoglou in 1955.

Philopappos Monument in Athens
Dating to AD 114-116, the monument atop Philopappou Hill was built by Athenians to honor Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos, a prince of Commagene, who had distinguished himself as an Athenian citizen and as a Roman consul and praetor. The tree-covered hill with its tidy footpaths offers superb views of the Acropolis and all of Athens and makes for a great escape from the heat and the traffic, especially during the summer months.
