Andros trash floating south

info: kathimerini
Hundreds of tons of trash that fell off the Cycladic island of Andros in February when a local landfill collapsed is washing up as far south as the Dodecanese, according to conservationists who said they had alerted Greek and European environment officials but had yet to see any action.
“Large amounts of plastic have reached the central Dodecanese, causing terrible pollution,” the Archipelagos Institute of Marine and Environmental Research said on Thursday.
“The recent southerly winds have scattered the trash across the entire coast of the Aegean,” the statement added.
The conservationists said they had informed European Environment Commissioner Janez Potocnik and Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Maria Damanaki as well as alerting state environmental inspectors and prosecutors.
“The foot-dragging shown to date does not offer much scope for optimism that the problem will be solved,” the Archipelagos statement concluded.
