DeFino, 45, is the son of Robert and Joyce DeFino. He will compete as part of Team USA in track and field events including the 400-meter dash, shot put, javelin and relay at the games running from June 25 to July 4.
A graduate of the Davidson School at Elwyn, DeFino has participated in Delaware County Special Olympics for 25 years, training in bowling, floor hockey, golf, softball, tennis and volleyball. He received gold and silver medals in roller skating at the 2003 Special Olympics World Games in Ireland. That same year he was inducted into the Delaware County Sports Hall of Fame.
“County Council has great respect for the Special Olympics program in Delaware County, which provides our residents who have intellectual disabilities with a chance to train, to compete, to experience and excitement and camaraderie of sports, and to be included in the community,” said Council Chair Jack Whelan.
Whelan said the resolution presented to DeFino recognizes his hard work and dedication to Special Olympics.
“We wish him the best of luck in Greece and we want him to come back to County Council and let us know how many medals he won. Of course, he's already a winner to us,” Whelan said.
DeFino is a member of the Arc of Delaware County, where he is employed.
“Attending the World Games gives me an opportunity to meet people from all over the world,” DeFino said. “I am proud that I was chosen to represent Team USA.”
